Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about our events and organised play.
Our events
What kinds of events do you run?
We run trading card and tabletop game events across Australia and New Zealand, from large convention weekends and open-invite tournaments to smaller qualifiers. See the Events page for what's coming up, or the Games page to browse by game.
Is it worth coming if I'm new to the game?
Yes! We aim to cater for every type of player: new, returning, experienced and competitive. There's a space for everyone.
I'm not into competitive play. Is there something for me?
Yes! As well as a main event, our larger events usually have side events, casual play areas and other activities. Check the event's page to see what's on.
Will there be vendors, artists and special guests?
Many of our larger events have them, and some also run activities outside the main game. Details are added to the event's page as they're confirmed.
Where and when is an event held, and what time do doors open?
The venue, dates and door times are on each event's page. Door times can change from day to day, so check them for the day you're coming.
Where do I find the schedule?
On the event's page. Where an event has a Day Of tab, it lists everything that's on, and more detail is often in the ticket information. Schedules are sometimes added closer to the event.
Will the event be livestreamed?
It depends on the event. Some major tournaments are streamed, while smaller events with limited venue space may not be. Check the event's page.
What is a Magic Spotlight event?
Spotlight events are open-invite Magic: The Gathering tournaments, so no qualification is needed. Anyone can compete for prize money, Pro Tour invites and a trophy. They're tied to Magic set releases, and the format is announced well in advance so you have time to prepare.
What is a Riftbound Showdown?
The Showdown Series is a smaller event format, with hundreds of players rather than the thousands at a Regional Qualifier. It provides another path to Regional Championship events.
Tickets and entry
Is entry free, or do I need a ticket?
It depends on the event. At some of our larger events, entry is free: you can walk the floor, visit artists and browse vendors at no cost. You'll need a ticket to play in events, access areas like CommandZone, or earn and redeem prizes at the Prize Wall. Check the event's page for what applies.
Can I come along just to watch?
At many events, yes. Where venue space is limited, there may be no spectator entry so that the space can go to players. The event's page will say.
What tickets are available?
Options vary by event and are listed on its page. They can include:
- Main event tickets
- Side event entries
- Day or weekend passes to play areas like CommandZone
- VIP passes or add-ons
Is there a VIP option?
Many events have one, sometimes under another name such as a Captains Package. Extras vary but can include front-of-line access, playmats, boosters and promos. Some VIP options are add-ons and need to be paired with another ticket, so check before you buy.
What is CommandZone?
A dedicated Commander play space at Magic events. A pass gives you access for the days you choose, along with any Game Tokens or extras listed for that pass.
When do tickets go on sale?
The on-sale date is announced on the event's page.
Can I collect my badge or register early?
Some larger events run a badge collection session before the weekend starts, where you can collect passes and register for events. If one is running, the details will be on the event's page.
Side events and tournaments
Will there be side events?
Most of our larger events have them. The event's page lists what's running, or links to the full list.
What if a side event sells out online?
At some events, more spaces are made available on the day. To guarantee a spot in a specific side event, buy your entry online ahead of time.
What is a Constructed tournament?
You arrive with your deck fully built and ready to go, then play a series of matches. Matches are usually best-of-three, with sideboarding between games. The Formats page has official format documents.
What's the difference between Sealed and Draft?
In both, you build your deck at the event. In Sealed, you build it from a set of booster packs you open. In Draft, players pick cards from packs as they pass them around the table.
What do Swiss rounds and Top 8 mean?
In Swiss rounds, you're paired each round against someone with a similar record, and nobody is knocked out along the way. Many tournaments then cut to the best players for single elimination, such as a Top 8.
Can I use proxy cards?
No, proxy cards are not allowed at official Wizards of the Coast events. For other games, check the event's rules.
Play Points and Prizing
What are Play Points?
They're how you earn prizes at our events. You earn them through events across the day or weekend, then redeem them at the Prize Wall. You can learn more about Play Points here.
What is the Prize Wall?
The place to redeem your Play Points at an event, for items like boosters, accessories and playmats.
What prizes can I win in a tournament?
It depends on the event. Side events often pay out in Play Points based on your record, while major main events can include prize money, promo cards and invitations to higher-level events.
Do Play Points carry over to other events?
No. While we are in beta, Play Points can not be carried over from one event to another. Make sure to spend all your points at the event you earned them at. Points will be reset between each of our events.
